My baby had a very poor front panel when I bought her. It was the worst
part of the car, despite apparently being
replaced in the 70s (along with the wings) by the Jensen factory after
a smash. The front panel was totally finished
off when I bumped the front of the car. As it turned out, the front
inner support structure was weak and rusted,
which caused the front to buckle very easily...
I drove her in and arrived at Colins workshop, and saw another FF under restoration:
The old bonnet had just been re-skinned in hand formed Aluminium. I
was amazed to see the subtle contours
of the different parts apparently duplicated perfectly:
I knew I wanted my car to look like this. Under the paint, at least...
My inner wing areas were very poor, and these were fabricated on site
by Colin. You can also see
where the kink in the wing was pulled out...
I think this is a new piece of the inner wing channeling. Colin wanted
to replace the whole channeling, but I was keen to keep as much of the
original metal, without compromising the structure:
The wing kink came out perfectly...
I am very pleased with this inner wing repair, the stone guard mounts
were missing on the car, but Colin
knew by heart how they were fitted on the FF:
Front panel/wing joint:
The repair was completed by only cutting off small pieces of the panels.
The wrong thing
to do is cut all the old panels off first, as this makes alignment
a nightmare. The front
can now be stripped back and painted....
